Introduction: Seychelles in Style

My family just got back from an amazing two week trip to the Seychelles islands!  We had a tremendous time there and were very lucky to miss the polar vortex and lots of snow that happened in Wisconsin while we were gone!

We decided to drive down one day early to Chicago in order to beat an upcoming snow storm on the day of our departure.  For that one night we stayed at the (really nice for an airport hotel) Hyatt Regency O’Hare. Instead of using points and then having to pay for parking separately I just booked the “park and fly” package for about $170.  That was a better deal because it included 14 nights of parking in the rate.

After having a nice meal and good sleep at the Hyatt Regency we took their complementary shuttle to O’Hare airport terminal 5 to catch our Qatar Airways flight to Doha. We arrived on time and had time to access the KLM Lounge prior to our flight.  The lounge was really basic and we have been there before, luckily this time it wasn’t overcrowded and we found a nice spot to relax and wait for our flight.

The snow really started to come down harder closer to our departure time and we got a little worried the flight would be cancelled or delayed but it held off long enough for us to board and take off.  I was really excited to fly on Qatar Airways Qsuites which is their new business class product (at the time of this writing)!  I went to the gate early to request to be the first to board in order to photograph the cabin before other passengers were on.  They told me to come at a certain time and she would let me board first (with my family).

I booked roundtrip Qsuites for this trip several months in advance.  I was thrilled to find three business class awards available with just a little flexibility.

We had a wonderful flight with our own quad section for the three of us!!  I cannot wait to write and share that review with you!

After 12 plus hours we landed in Doha.  We were in for another treat as we secured access to the AMAZING Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Class Lounge in Doha’s airport!  We had an eight hour connection and this is THE place to spend it!

I will of course have full coverage of the lounge as it was amazing and I explored every bit of it!

After our time in the the Al Safwa First Lounge it was time to catch our next flight to Seychelles!

About 4.5 hours later we landed in the capitol city of Victoria bright and early! We went through immigration quickly grabbed our bags and caught (an overpriced) taxi to our first hotel:  Doublee Tree Resort and Spa by Hilton – Allamanda.

We spent our first two nights here on the main island of Mahe and used our Hilton points.  I wanted to stay here because I knew we would be jet lagged and it was fairly close to the airport.

We also got a driver and got to see most all of Mahe in a day.

After two nights at the DoubleTree (and still jetlagged) we took a boat to our next resort on Silhouette Island: Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort and Spa.

We paid cash for our four nights here.  I recently opened up the AMEX Hilton Aspire card in preparation of this stay which helped quite a bit.  This resort had some really cool granite rock formations that I will share in the full review!

Then we splurged and took a ferry over to Praslin and stayed at the super luxurious Raffles Seychelles!

We spent four nights here and they were spectacular.  We really liked our time on Praslin and the resort treated us really well! We got to check out Curieuse island and some other beaches on Praslin.  We also got to see some really cool tortoises while on the resort and Curieuse!

Finally, to put the cherry on the sundae we spent our last two nights back on Mahe at the Four Seasons Seychelles. WOW, what a resort!

We have never spent so much on a hotel but damn I think it was worth it.  Raffles is probably a better overall value but the beach at the Four Seasons is probably the best beach I have ever seen!  Incredible setting and property! I can’t wait to put together the full review on this one!

Finally our 12 nights on Seychelles were over and it was time to say “Au revoir”.  We cabbed it back to the airport to catch our flight back to Doha.  We had access to a lounge prior to our flight but honestly after the Al Safwa Lounge in Doha I didn’t even bother taking pictures!

After another nice regional business class flight we landed in Doha late at night and ready for some sleep!  So of course we went back to Al Safwa First Lounge for a nap and some breakfast.  I will cover how we accessed this lounge without flying first class when I post the lounge review. We had a nice 5.5 hours sleep a shower and then a leisurely breakfast.

Finally we had our last flight back home to Chicago which was on Qatar’s famous Qsuites again. This time while we were all booked in the middle quad seats we decided to do some seat swapping and I ended up with a nice window seat just across the isle from my son and wife. It was nice to get a slightly different perspective of a window seat vs a middle seat.

After a 14.5 hour flight (that seemed like it went on forever) we landed back in Chicago and the cold snowy winter weather.  What a great trip and vacation.  Stay tuned for the upcoming installments/reviews to catch all the details!
