Introduction: New Years Trip to Riviera Maya

Happy New Year everyone!

For the first time in several years I decided to take off the week of Christmas and thought “why not take a vacation after Christmas to end the year?”

So in Mid July I started looking for locations for our vacation.  This is the highest demand time of year to travel and prices are sky high! After looking around I decided to just take a “simple” trip to to Riviera Maya as we enjoy Mexico and have not been to the Yucatan Peninsula in several years.  This would be our son’s first time to Mexico and I cannot believe Mexico would be his FIFTH country visited at only two years old.

With my Southwest Companion Pass expiring on 12/31/17 I figured we could use that one last time.  Flights from Milwaukee were sold out already! I then looked to Midway (an hour or two drive away depending on traffic) where I was able to find much more availability. So our outbound looked like this:

My son and my ticket cost $66.12 and a bit over 44,000 points

I booked my ticket with my son for $66.12 and about 44,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points. My wife was my companion so her ticket was an additional $33.06.  So all in for three of us we paid less than $100 out of pocket to get to Cancun on Southwest.

On the way home we would no longer have the companion pass so that hurt a bit. And thus our inbound looked like this:

We booked three tickets from Cancun to Midway for $139.32 and about 66,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points! These are the most expensive tickets we have ever redeemed for on Southwest! Yikes!

The alternative was to pay $686 per person or a grand total of $2058!  That’s what the cash price was via Southwest’s website.

With flights out of the way I went ahead and found some nice cash and points availability at the Andaz Mayakoba for our seven night stay in Riviera Maya.  We had an enjoyable stay at this new resort and in my next article I will have a full review of the resort and how we paid for it.

We also decided to get some family photos taken while in Mexico at the Andaz Mayakoba. We have some very nice memories and photo’s to remind us of this trip.

We timed our trip perfectly because temperatures back home in Wisconsin were in the negative’s including windchill, meanwhile in Mexico it was about 80 degrees everyday and only rained twice for about an hour during our seven days.

We love the Mayakoba development in which the Andaz is situated in.  We have stayed at the Banyan Tree and Fairmont Mayakoba properties on our last stays in the Yucatan. Its nice to have a points option there now. I will share where we think the Andaz ranks within the development in my full review.

Thanks for reading and hears to a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to us all.
