For our limited time in Abu Dhabi I made it a priority to see the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. This is the biggest tourist destination in Abu Dhabi by far and also the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates. After a long nap in our hotel room my wife decided she wanted to stay in bed and stay in the air conditioning with our baby. I decided to get ready and grab a cab to the Mosque.

I arrived at the Mosque at dusk and was amazed how pristine it looked. The structure looks brand new!  It was very hot at around 6pm! It was around 90 degrees hot!  I marveled at the structure and decide to take a few photos.

I found the entrance to visitors of the mosque and there was a very short line to enter.  The men went into one line and woman into another. Both lines were subject to metal detector security checks.  My camera and tripod also had to go through a security scanner as well.  There was no admission charge to enter the mosque.

Once you enter the “inside” of the actual mosque it’s lit up and all a brilliant white with gold accents throughout!  The white pillars are adorned with tile with flowers on them.

Early on the crowds were more numerous but after about 30 minutes or so they started to lighten up. Amazingly the mosque can hold up to 40,000 worshipers!

I have to repeat how hot it was on this evening. I thought I had to wear long sleeve shirt and pants to enter the mosque but it turns out there were quite a lot of people wearing shorts and t-shirts. I was sweating quite a bit walking around during my visit!

My entire time at the mosque was probably 1.5 hours as it’s a nice place to walk around quietly and take it all in. There are certain prayer rooms or halls but since I am not Muslim I didn’t enter them.

After nearly sweating through my shirt I decided I better call it a night!  I exited through the same area I originally entered and saw two cabs and was able to hail one.  Be sure to have cash as this cab only took cash and I didn’t have quite enough so I had to grab some cash from the front desk at our hotel when he dropped me off.

All in all, a must visit.  I was somewhat disappointed my wife didn’t want to experience the mosque but maybe we will be in Abu Dhabi again in the near future!?
