Australian Open Day Two (4th round of tourney)

Rod Laver Arena

I wanted to attend another day of the Australian Open before we left and it seemed like all the players I wanted to see were in one half of the draw. So the night before I went online in our hotel room to try to get tickets for Rod Laver Arena day session. The reason I wanted day session tickets was because there are three matches played vs only two matches played during the night session. The night session did however showcase Andy Murray vs Grigor Dmitrov which is a huge match up for the 4th round! I went on to Viagogo.com to see what was for sale. I found two tickets at a reasonable price however when I went to purchase them someone else beat me to them and they were gone. I figured it wasn’t meant to be and told my wife we can plan on doing something else on our last day in Melbourne. In the morning when I woke up I checked Viagogo again and did find two E-tickets together and they were decent. The only downside is I had to pay $200usd per ticket but I have no idea if/when I will ever make it back down to Australia so I sprung for the tickets.

This time we took a cab to the stadium as we attended church Sunday morning and couldn’t find our way back to the tram zone.  The cabbie dropped us off right in front of Rod Laver Arena.  Last time we went we arrived late so this time I wanted to get there early.  In fact we got there before any of the matches started and there were children playing kids tennis on Rod Laver.  It appeared to be 10 and under tennis which is a smaller version of tennis with smaller courts and equipment.

Eugenie Bouchard vs Irina-Camelia Begu

First match of the day was Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard vs Irina Begu.  I grabbed two beers to hold me over for a bit while we watched the match.

Maria Sharapova vs Shui Peng

Up next was world number 2 Maria Sharapova vs Shui Peng, the top ranked Chinese woman in the draw after the retirement of defending women’s champion LI Na.  We also got to see Maria when we attended the French Open last year (2014) and she also stayed in our hotel (Park Hyatt Paris).

Rafa Nadal vs Kevin Anderson

Another reason I wanted to attend the day session is to see Rafa Nadal play.  He is my favorite athlete to watch so its always fun to watch him play.   He was playing 17th seeded South African Kevin Anderson so I figured it might be a more competitive match than some of the earlier rounds.

All in all a great day of tennis!!! We really enjoyed our time at Melbourne Park and getting to experience the Australian Open!!! Maybe one day if we’re lucky we can come back again! For any tennis or sports fan I would recommend this event in a heartbeat!!!

  1. Definitely enjoyed your trip report. Thanks for posting. Were the night session tickets harder to find? I know federerusually always plays at night. And how was the rush entering the tennis grounds? It can be rather heavy at Flushing Meadows.

    • @ TJ, thanks! I am glad you enjoyed the report. I found day and night sessions available but as the rounds get later the price goes up and of course order of play and who is playing on what court is a big factor. Fed doesnt always play nights but almost always plays the main court.
