The Road to Hana
Of course being first timers on Maui we had to take the road to Hana! Its probably the most popular activity for Maui visitors. We got up extremely early and had a quick breakfast at our hotel and we left by 7AM on Thanksgiving day. Our concierge suggested we leave early to beat the crowds and to not get stuck behind the many tour buses and shuttles and that was good advice because our trip took all day!
We decided to go “all the way around” meaning you go past Hana and keep going through the south side of the island where the roads are “iffy”. We also wanted to do some hiking/trekking and just a bit past Hana is a good spot for that. Wiamoku Falls is about a 2 mile hike in and 2 mile hike out so that was a perfect hike that isn’t overly strenuous. At the end of that we checked out lower falls pool which is a must see. I will suggest to get a jeep or a vehicle with good road clearance. I would not do the road to Hana again in anything but a jeep or four wheel drive type vehicle.
We made sure to take our time and enjoy the scenery. We did not drive fast and people would tailgate or catch up to us quickly but I ignored them because I don’t have the opportunity to see this beauty and I am not in a rush to experience this beauty. We also had a book that gave suggestions on where to stop. So we would stop off every so often maybe just for 5 minutes to explore and then hop back in the car. We made sure to bring a few snacks and a huge bottle of water for our hiking and at some of the stops. We did not eat dinner till back at the hotel over 12 hours after leaving. So I will leave you with many photos of our Thanksgiving day road to Hana trip from beginning to the end! Enjoy!
Let me know if you have any questions about the road to Hana and I will do my best to help! It is a great trip and a lot of fun. Make sure you stop off to do some hiking or swimming and bask in the moment of the beauty of Maui!
